Peter Finch is a PGA professional and one of the UK’s best-known golf YouTubers. His channel mixes course vlogs, equipment and challenges with a steady stream of lessons, often with top coaches.
In February 2026 he posted “My Game Has Changed Forever… Peter Finch’s TPI Lesson”. It’s a long one, over an hour, filmed at the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) in California with TPI co-founders Dr Greg Rose and Dave Phillips. Finch says in the description that the visit was supported by Titleist and TPI.
We think it’s one of the clearest demonstrations of an idea that matters to every golfer: sometimes your swing faults are really your body talking.
DE-SHANK isn’t affiliated with Peter Finch, Titleist or TPI, and nothing here suggests they endorse our app.
The idea: technical or physical?
Early in the debrief, Finch’s hosts make the key point. If you’re struggling with your swing, the cause could be technical, or it could be physical. A full screening helps work out which.
Finch describes it as something he’d wanted to do ever since turning professional.
What the screening showed
We won’t try to summarise an hour of content, but a few moments stood out.
Posture: a hint of S
During the screening, the coaches note that Finch arches his back a little more than most at set-up, comparing the shape to the letter S. They explain that this can affect rotation and posture control in the swing.
That matches TPI’s description of S-posture, where too much arch in the lower back can switch off the core and make it harder to hold posture.
Rotation: more lateral than rotational
In one test, Finch is asked to take his 5-iron posture, cross his arms, and rotate his lower body without moving his shoulders, imagining he’s standing in a barrel. The coaches note it looks “a little lateral”, side to side. When he’s asked to do the opposite, rotating his upper body while keeping his lower body still, he does it well.
This is TPI’s Pelvic Rotation Test. In the debrief, the coaches link it to the swing: they might expect to see more lateral movement than rotation.

A sense of perspective
Finch receives a “fitness handicap” from the screening, and the hosts are quick to reassure him that his result is common and that some tour players score in a similar range. It’s a nice reminder that nobody passes everything.
All credit for the screening and analysis goes to Dr Greg Rose, Dave Phillips and TPI.
What golfers can learn
Some swing faults won’t fix with drills alone
If your hips can’t rotate independently of your shoulders, you may keep swaying no matter how many alignment sticks you use.
Self-screening is a useful first step
You don’t need a trip to California to try a basic test. TPI’s article on the pelvic rotation test explains how to do it, what a good result looks like, and how to tell a mobility issue from a stability issue.
Swing and body should be looked at together
The most powerful part of the video is watching the coaches connect what they saw in the gym with what they saw on the swing analysis.
How to apply it
- Try the pelvic rotation test as TPI describes it.
- Film your swing face-on and look for lateral movement of the hips.
- Compare the two. If the test showed a sideways shift, and your swing shows sway, there may be a physical link.
- Get help if needed. TPI’s website has a directory of certified experts.
DE-SHANK can help with step 2. Our hip sway score shows how much your hips slide instead of turning, and our posture change score shows whether you stand up or dip. Our how it works page explains the best camera set-up.
DE-SHANK gives estimates from one camera view. It’s designed for practice feedback, to help you spot habits and track trends. It isn’t medical or physiotherapy advice.

Why we like this video
It’s long, but it’s a rare chance to sit in on an elite-level screening. Finch is open about his own limitations, which makes it relatable. Explore more on the Peter Finch Golf channel.
